Personal Philosophy

I believe health, whether it is physical or mental health, can best be viewed on a continuum. That is, there are degrees of "wellness" or "illness", "abilities" or "disabilities". There are a multitude of contributing factors, both genetic and environmental, that lead to an individual's health status. Therefore, it is unlikely that each individual will respond to a given treatment in the same way. This seems to be borne out more and more in the medical research. Based upon my personal experience with yoga, and my professional experience working with infants and children, I think that yoga has much to offer an infant or child who is particularly challenged to cope with her or his environment. Yoga is a naturally individualized approach that can help a child reach her or his maximum physical and mental well being.

My personal philosophy has evolved out of more than 10 years of professional experience assessing children's development, intelligence, and achievement as a faculty member at the Medical School of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio in the Department of Pediatrics. My experience includes interacting with children who are developmentally delayed, on the autism spectrum, have cerebral palsy, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, behavioral disorders, and who have sensory processing dysfunction.
